An ongoing list of my favourite comic characters
→ Katherine ‘Kitty’ Pryde | Shadowcat | MarvelI’ll re-write this later once I’ve thought some more, but for now…
I have so much love for Kitty Pryde as a character. Like Bobby, you get to see her evolve over the course of the X-books. She grows and develops from a kid, with no real idea of who she is, into, in my opinion at least, one of the strongest members of the team.
She’s incredible really. She’s whip smart with a tongue just as biting at times. She is not afraid to say what she is thinking and if she believes someone to be wrong, she will call them out. She is not afraid of going toe to toe with other members of the team should she need to.
She’s often the team’s voice of reason, the one that keeps them ‘good’ if that makes sense. If she doesn’t agree with them, thinks that what they are doing is wrong, she will tell them. Not only that, she will offer up alternatives.
She is inherently a good person, well liked and always willing to do whatever she can to help. She always has other people’s best interests at heart and will defend those she cares about fiercely. She’s just one of those characters that you can’t help but love. Sure, she has her moments of doing stupid things, she makes mistakes just like everyone else, but she’s always just as willing to admit when she was wrong as she is to call other people out.
Her ability is one that I have always loved too. She is not a fighter. Her power is more defensive than offensive and at times, especially in the early days, it often left her feeling like she wasn’t as good as the others, like she wasn’t as important.
Over the years though, she has found her feet and created a space within the team that is especially for her. While her ability may appear to be more about protection than damaging, she has found ways over the years to be both. She is just as dangerous as any other member of the team, just as capable.
She proves that you don’t have to be the biggest or the strongest to make a difference. Everyone has their strengths and everyone can find a place that fits them just as they are. She’s one of the nicest people you’re ever likely to meet.
